DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHA
This project was realized for an assignment for class. I got the role of director, and together with a producer we got assigned a book to adapt into a concept for a series. This had to be done in a specific genre for a specific audience. We had to adapt Don Quixote de la Mancha into a family friendly horror series. The assignment was to create a concept and show it with a teaser and one pager, as if we would be presenting it to real investors. We did this together with four other students, of whom, two dynamic designers and two visual designers. As the director I focues mostly on what my vision was and how we should make a family friendly version of Don Quixote.
For our version I decided to keep the same setting, but instead of being delusional, Don Quixote is the only one who can see the monsters that are trying to take over La Mancha. Just like Cassandra in Greek Mythology he is doomed to have no one believe in him. Except for Sacho Panza. Sancho at first, like in the original story, is driven by money and a title offered by Don Quixote, but he soon realizes that the Don is not crazy. Throughout the series, Sancho’s appreciation for Don Quixote grows, until the point he doesn’t even really care for the money and title offered to him in the beginning.
In our version of Cervantes’ story we will have real monsters working together with Rocinante, Don Quixote’s horse. Rocinante has a backwards way of showing her love for the don. She wants to continue going on adventures together and thinks the only way for that to work is to work together with the monsters. She will find out at the end of the series that her friendship with Don Quixote is not relying on slayig monsters, but on their trust for each other.
